Concealed Weapon License


The Walton County Tax Collector's Office has partnered with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to offer citizens the opportunity to apply for a concealed weapon license  or renew a current license locally at the DeFuniak Springs Office. This service is offered by appointment only.

First-Time Applicants

1. Determine if you are eligible for a concealed weapon license by reading the eligibity requirements or answering a few simple questions to determine eligibility.

2. Applicants must demonstrate competency with a firearm in order to qualify for a license. Learn more about the acceptable forms of training.

4. The Walton County Tax Collector's Office is a participant in the Concealed Weapons Intake System, serving as an agent for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. This partnership allows local residents to submit their application to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services electronically. This service is currently only available in the DeFuniak Springs Office in Walton County and offered by appointment only.

What should you bring with you if you're a first time applicant?

  • A picture ID. A driver license or state-issued identification card is perfectly acceptable;
  • A copy of a training document or other certificate that confirms you are proficient with a firearm; if you are a veteran, a DD214 noting an honorable discharge will suffice for firearms training documentation; active duty military can simply bring in their military ID card or a copy of their current orders;
  • A personal check, cashier's check, cash or money order in the proper amount. You may also pay by credit card or debit card.The cost to apply for a concealed weapon license at the Tax Collector's Office is $124.00. Acceptable forms of payment include check, cash, debit or credit card. (*A convenience fee of $1.95 flat fee applies to PIN debit cards and a 2.5% fee applies to credit cards.) A discount is offered to law enforcement officers with a letter on agency letterhead stating you are currently employed in a law enforcement position.) 
  • If you have ever been arrested, you should bring with you certifed copies of the court documentation reflecting the final disposition of the charge(s) filed against you.
  • If you were born outside the United States, or if you are a permanent legal resident alien, you will need to bring official documentation with you that confirms your citizenship status. Please review eligibility information concerning citizenship requirements.

(Your photo and fingerprints will be taken during the processing, you do not need to get those in advance.)

What you should bring with you if you're renewing?

  • Current license or renewal letter from the Florida Department of Agriculture;
  • A picture ID. A driver license or state-issued identification card is perfectly acceptable.

 

What can you expect once you arrive?

Upon arrival, if you are not immediately greeted by a team member, please check in at the kiosk under the "Appointment Check-In". Once you are called back for your appointment, you will be directed to a computer station where you will complete an electronic application form. You do not need to complete an application form in advance. Once you have completed the application, a team member will review and notarize your application, take your photograph, electronically scan your fingerprints, and take your payment. You should be able to complete the entire process in less than an hour. Individuals renewing will not need to be fingerprinted and should be able to complete the entire process in half an hour.  

How long will it take for the division to process my concealed weapon license application?

By law, The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services must either issue a license or deny an application within 90 days of receiving a complete application. However, the actual turnaround time will ultimately depend on the workload facing the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services employees in Tallahassee and may be substantially less than 90 days. Veterans and active duty military applications will be reviewed withing 30 days.

You should be aware of two issues that may affect your application processing time.

  • If your electronic fingerprint scan is insufficiently legible to complete a background check, the division will notify you by letter that you will need to submit another set of fingerprings. You can return to our office for a second fingerprint scan.
  • After the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services employees have reviewed your application, you may be notified by letter if they need additional information from you. For example, the division may need clarification from you about your background check results. If you receive such a letter, you will need to respond by mail directly to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
